Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas clearly has a superb knowledge of Portuguese football as he has ordered his scouts to watch little-known midfielder Vitor Gomes. The Chelsea boss is looking for cover at right-back and defensive midfield, two positions in which Gomes is able to play.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea appear set for a bidding war after it was revealed Juan Manuel Vargas is set to quit Fiorentina after a bust-up with his manager. Sinisa Mihajlovic has spoken about the fall-out in which Vargas arrived late for training after a night of heavy drinking.

Ex-Liverpool star Javier Mascherano has attacked Manchester City for their treatment of Argentinean team-mate Carlos Tevez.   The Barcelona midfielder said City's treatment of Tevez was "ugly" and criticised the "attacks" on last season's top scorer.   Mascherano played with Tevez at Corinthians and West Ham United, before joining Liverpool in 2007.

Great Britain’s top endurance runner Mo Farah has been named European Athletics Association’s European Athlete of the Year for 2011. The 28-year-old beat French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre and British 400-metre hurdles World Champion Dai Greene to the award which is voted for by fans, media and European Athletics Member Federations.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has expressed his delight about returning to action for the club, after describing his six-month injury lay-off as a “nightmare”.   "It's been a nightmare for me,” Gerrard lamented. “I'm not the best when I'm out injured and watching games.

Try as she might, Tanni Grey-Thompson cannot suppress a beaming, infectious grin. Less than twelve months until the Paralympic Games get underway, it would be a gross understatement to suggest that she is thrilled about the festival of disabled sport that will descend on London next August.
