Wilkinson Will Relish His 'Amazing' First Heineken Cup Final Appearance

Jonny Wilkinson has admitted that todays Heineken Cup final is all that he has to play for and branded the opportunity as amazing. The Toulon captain whose form has led his side to his first ever Heineken Cup semi-final and final will face Clermont Auvergne today and Wilkinson put the success down to the group of players he is with in the side. "There is no doubt that where I stand now this is all I have got to play for" Wilkinson told The Guardian. "That gives you a fair idea of the importance of it to me. I am playing in a one-game-at-a-time situation. "To actually get a shot at something like this at this stage in your career is amazing. It was my first semi-final a few weeks back. This is my first final. "It is a case of realising how fortunate you are to be in a group that can provide you with that opportunity and make the most of it. "

"I've never been one to think massively about form and what that means but I guess I can say that I feel good about where I am" Wilkinson said. "I am really enjoying the group I am with. I have been offered the opportunity to go out and be myself.

While the top 12 teams in the Series standings contest the Cup competition of the Marriott London Sevens at Twickenham last weekend fans from all over the world came to enjoy the fun. One of those is Wales and British & Irish Lions centre Jamie Roberts. He took time out from his busy schedule as a rugby player and newly qualified doctor to catch the action. What makes these events so special is the atmosphere and the crowd. To play in that is great its like a test match. Im sure a lot of players on the forthcoming Lions tour will have come up through the Sevens pathway. After day 1 Series champions New Zealand were the only side to win all three of their matches in front of a record day one Rugby Sevens crowd of 71898 and will face Argentina in the Cup quarter finals. Hosts England started strongly beating Fiji and Samoa in their opening two matches but lost to Argentina 26-17 in the final match of the day at Twickenham. Despite the loss they ended day one as Pool C winners and second seeds to set up a quarter final against Glasgow Sevens champions South Africa.

Owen Farrell Wants Wilkinson On Lions Tour

You might think the last person Owen Farrell would like to see joining him in the British & Irish Lions camp is the man he is constantly compared to and who was last seen patting the youngster on the head at Twickenham after dropping a goal that dumped Saracens out of the Heineken Cup. But Lions fly half in waiting Farrell who hopes to guide Saracens past Northampton today in the Aviva Premiership play-off semi-final at the Allianz Stadium would like nothing better than to see Jonny Wilkinson joining him in Australia for next months tour. Would I like to see Jonny out there with us? asked the man whose old head on young shoulders kicking prowess and hard tackling forces immediate comparisons with a young Wilkinson. It would be fantastic for me to have him there especially as he plays in the same position as me. Jonny raised the bar as fly halves are concerned in terms of setting standards. Every person is different of course and there are different things about our games but to be compared to a young Jonny Wilkinson doesnt annoy me. I see it as a massive compliment.

Foden Hopes "Rubbish Season" Ends on a High.

Ben Foden the forgotten star of English rugby hopes that his rubbish season ends on a high with an England tour to Argentina to get him back into the reckoning and first todays Aviva Premiership semi-final play-off at Saracens. The former first-choice England full-back lost his place after an ankle ligament injury resulted in an operation during the autumn internationals and with the emergence of Alex Goode and Mike Brown in the number 15 and 14 jerseys Foden was suddenly out in the cold for the Six Nations with his Lions dreams over. Now Foden finally back to full fitness after a season-long struggle with injury is determined to make up for lost ground and for the fact that he has played with Northampton in four successive losing semi-finals. Were too good a team to keep on being the bridesmaid the full-back said last night. When you look at the players we have in our team were as good as anyone but we keep on falling short. Ive talked about it all week.

Also in attendance were former international cricketer Michael V aughan former British and Irish Lions player Gareth Edwards and comedian and close friend of Tom Jack Whitehall who gave a special performance on the night. The money raised will now allow for one young talented individual to be granted a rare scholarship to Millfield School the same school which helped nurtured and develop the special talent of Tom himself from a young age.

Ian Stafford: The England Starting Autumn XV Will be Fascinating

After four games of this year's RBS Six Nations tournament everything in the England garden was looking rosey. After five games the weeds had appeared. Wales's 30-3 hammering of England not only took away both a Grand Slam and a Six Nations title but transformed the fortunes of the team collectively and individually. Suddenly 10 Englishmen (one in Matt Stevens a retired test player) were booked for the Lions down under and not the 15 before they came to the Millennium Stadium. Suddenly Chris Robshaw hitherto a strong contender for the Lions captaincy was not a Lion and would be rested for England's tour in June to Argentina. Suddenly head coach Stuart Lancaster was forced to re-examine his whole approach and his playing personnel. Now it seems missing the Lions tour may be a blessing in disguise especially if you are a young man about to his worth in Buenos Aires and Salta under the nose of Lancaster. Billy Vunipola for example will be vying with Ben Morgan for the number eight jersey in South America. That will prove to be a fascinating tussle. Christian Wade the joint top try scorer this season in the Aviva Premiership will see his chance to force his way into England's first choice back three.
