Great Britain’s swimmers went from strength to strength in Berlin as they concluded their performance at the FINA World Cup with 13 medals, when former World Championship silver medallist Fran Halsall won gold in the 100 metres individual medley and James Goddard set a new British record in the 200m event.
Halsall, who became the first Briton to win five medals at a single European Championships in Budapest last year, had already won silver and bronze on Saturday and returned to the pool on Sunday for the short-course event.
Goddard won silver in the men's equivalent on Saturday behind Michael Phelps and found himself in the lane alongside the 14-time Olympic champion again, in the 200m individual medley on Sunday.
Goddard pushed Phelps all the way but the American had no intention of being overhauled to win in 1m 51.89secs, with the Briton setting a new British record of 1m 52.27s in second, lowering his own mark from Dec 2009 in one of the super-suits by 0.35secs. Goddard also took bronze in the 100m breaststroke in 58.22secs.
Phelps however remains the man to beat, after a fantastic return to competitive action, as he finished the weekend with four gold medals in four world best times this year.
The American added the 200m individual medley title to the 100m and 400m individual medley titles he claimed on Saturday and went on to win the 200m backstroke final.
He earlier declined to race in Sunday's 100m butterfly final having qualified second fastest from the heats.
