MILEY CLAIMS FIRST GB SWIMMING GOLD

Hannah Miley produced a fantastic second half race to win Great Britain's first gold medal of the European Championships in Budapest in the 400 metres individual medley.

The 21 year-old Scot overhauled 2009 World Champion Katinka Hosszu as she pulled out a stunning breaststroke leg and then maintained her lead through her freestyle to win in a championship record of 4 mins 43.09 secs, leaving Hosszu in second and Zsuzsanna Jakabos third.

Miley could only muster fourth place in the medley at the world championships in Rome last year. Her victory here marks the first major medal of her career.

"That is really unexpected. It's just great," she said. "We've worked so hard, me and my dad [coach Patrick] and he has put so much planning into it. It's all finally come together. I wanted to make my statement to the world: I'm coming through."

Miley followed her victory in the medley with a silver medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.
