Henson Included in Wales Preliminary Squad

Gavin Henson has been included in the 35-man Wales training squad that leaves for a week-long camp in Poland this weekend.

Warren Gatland has also named six uncapped players, including Ospreys pair Ashley Beck and Rhys Webb and Cardiff Blues winger Harry Robinson. The other players yet to appear in a senior international are Liam Williams, Rhodri Jones and Lou Reed.

Talismanic openside flanker Sam Warburton will captain the side, while James Hook, Mike Phillips and Lee Byrne are set to make the trip despite having signed with French clubs.

Though Craig Mitchell of Exeter, Saracens’ Rhys Gill and Sale Sharks back-row forward Andy Powell are all included despite their contracts with Aviva Premiership sides, there is no place for former British and Irish Lions scrum-half Dwayne Peel.

It is the first time Henson has part of the international set-up since dislocating his wrist in a World Cup warm-up match against England in August.

"We have had to strike a balance with this squad," said Gatland, who guided Wales to fourth place in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

"The majority are those players who excelled for Wales during the Rugby World Cup, but we are also taking the opportunity to look at one or two youngsters before probably cutting our numbers even further before the start of the RBS Six Nations.

"We have kept a couple of older heads and we have injuries, with Alun Wyn Jones, Josh Turnbull, Rob McCusker and Luke Charteris all unavailable to us, but the emphasis on development and planning for the future is there for everyone to see.

"These are exciting times for Welsh rugby. We showed a huge amount of potential at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and we will be working as hard as humanly possible to ensure that we reach our potential in this year's Six Nations championship."

After a week at the Olympic training base in the village of Spala, the squad will be trimmed ahead of Wales' opening match of the Six Nations championship against Ireland in Dublin.
