Carl Froch has announced that his next fight in the Super Six tournament against Arthur Abraham will be for the WBC super-middleweight title.
Froch suffered his first ever defeat, and lost his title in the process, at the hands of Mikkel Kessler but has now been handed the opportunity to reclaim his title.
It had been thought that the bout would be a non-title contest but an eye injury to Kessler has ruled the Dane out for at least a year. Froch also announced that the contest with Abraham will no longer be a quarter-final showdown but a semi-final.
"This fight with Abraham will be for the WBC title... and will be a straight semi-final. It's good news for me," Froch told BBC Radio Nottingham. "There's me and Abraham left, and we're fighting. Andre Ward versus Andre Dirrell is the other semi.
"In the final, you'll have a WBC-WBA unification fight. After the final, Kessler's got a shot at the WBC. Kessler will be what they call the 'marital' WBC champion, which means that Abraham and I are fighting for my old title."
"It means I'll be world champion assuming I do the job properly and Kessler would get a shot at challenging for his old belt back because he vacated it. So there's an undisputed world title fight in the final, which will probably be at Madison Square Garden in New York."
The slightly confusing scenario means that Froch has the opportunity to regain his title and add the WBA belt should he make it to the tournament final.
First he must make it past Abraham on October 2 in Monaco which is no easy task. The 30-year-old has only suffered one loss, a controversial disqualification against American Andre Dirrell. Should Froch beat the Armenian fighter he will face either Dirrell or Ward.
