The US Captain unvieled his four picks to make the American team for the Ryder Cup this afternoon and he has focused players in form and hot with the putter.
Dustin Johnson was the first name Love delivered to the media ,who he described as the “best athlete” in the team. Johnson is ranked at sixth on the driving distance in the PGA tour and throughout the press conference Love described how he wanted players who can “plug” out certain holes and Johnson can certainly do this. Johnson is also second on the birdie or better table for Par 5's which will have caught the captains eye as he was weighing up his selection options.
Former US Open Champion Jim Furyk was next and the US captain pointed towards Furyk's vast team and match play experience: “I played in 5 Ryder Cup's with him and he has played eight now and in his last international team event he came back with 5 wins and no losses.”
Brandt Snedeker was followed. Snedeker has been on fire with his putter ever since the second and third rounds of the British Open where it felt like he was holing everything. Love pointed towards this asset: “We need hot putters, and in Brandt we have got that, he probably the hottest putter on the tour right now.”
He also feels that Snedeker shares a quality with his final pick, Steve Stricker : “Steve is like Brandt, I think they could play with anyone on the team.”
In Steve Stricker, Davis Love III believes he has the best player on the PGA tour in recent time: “Steve is my friend and I trust him on and off the course, he has been the best player on the tour over the last five or six years.”
Stricker reiterated the mutual respect for his captain: “Being excited is an understatement, he led me around Wales on the last day and I cannot wait to play for him”
Meanwhile, Snedeker furthered his enthusiam towards his first Ryder Cup: : “I felt the pressure over the past few weeks, now I hope to make Davis look like a genius.”
