Arsenal will face stiff competition from Chelsea in their pursuit of Marseille midfielder Lucho Gonzalez.
OM head coach Didier Deschamps - himself a former Chelsea player - has revealed the Gunners have made contact with him and are interested in the Argentina playmaker.
With Cesc Fabregas back at Barcelona and Samir Nasri on the verge of a move to Manchester - either City or United - Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is desperate to recruit a proven creative midfielder and he has identified Gonzalez as the ideal addition.
"I talked to him and the one that really interests them is Lucho Gonzalez," Deschamps reportedly said at a press conference.
"Arsene Wenger believes that he is a great player who could be useful to his team even though he does not fit in with his recruitment policy.
"He wanted him on loan but it was not acceptable to us, there are no negotiations."
However, according to fanatix.com, Wenger will have to hold off interest from Chelsea as their manager Andre Villas-Boas looks to add more creativity and imagination to his team's midfield.
And the Blues are reportedly ready to test Marseille's resolve with a £5m offer for the 30-year-old.
It is thought Villas-Boas has identified Gonzalez as the ideal short-term replacement for Michael Essien, who is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
