Spurs Winger Announces Hopes to Quit England for La Liga

Tottenham midfielder Giovani dos Santos has revealed he is hoping to secure a permanent switch to Racing Santander this summer.

The Mexico international joined Racing in a loan move in January having failed to break into the Spurs first team.

Manager Harry Redknapp had hoped dos Santos would force his way into the side this season after excelling for his country at last summer's World Cup in South Africa.

The former Barcelona trainee was expected to shine at White Hart Lane when he moved from the Catalans in 2008. Yet, he struggled to adapt to the rigours of Premier League football and was shipped out on loan spells to Ipswich and Galatasaray.

The arrival of Raphael van der Vaart at the beginning of the 2010/11 season pushed the 22-year-old further down the Spurs pecking order which led to his loan switch to Racing.

Now dos Santos is hoping the deal can be turned into a permanent move and end his frustrating spell in England.

"I'm very happy because I'm going through a good patch," he said. "It might be the best of my career. I feel very comfortable at Racing. I'm getting lots of playing time and I've arrived here motivated for the Gold Cup.

“At the moment I’m trying to rediscover my best form, and I want to be back at the top of the world game in the not-too-distant future. That’s my goal and I’m very focused on achieving it.”

The winger has been in impressive form since returning to Spain, scoring five goals in 16 matches, and he has admitted he feels at home in Santander.

"I'd love to stay in Spain and with Racing," he added. "Spanish football is where I grew up and, although I liked going to Tottenham, things did not work out. But now I am very comfortable.

“I’m really happy with how things have gone in Santander, I think coming back to Spanish football has been crucial. This is where I grew up as a player, where I learnt the game. I think that my contribution has been very good. I’m on top form and showing what I’m capable of, and that for me was what really mattered when it came to choosing to join this team.”

As part of the loan arrangement, Racing have the option to buy dos Santos for €11m.
