Pienaar Warns Tottenham Over Big Club Threat For Modric

Everton loanee Steven Pienaar has warned that parent club Tottenham Hotspur will have to fight to hold onto talismanic midfielder Luka Modric in the summer.

Modric was the subject of a prolonged transfer saga, which saw him remain with Tottenham Hotspur, despite reported interest from Chelsea.

The 26 year-old has been key to Tottenham's excellent form this season and has helped propel Harry Redknapp's side to third in the Premier League.

However, despite Spurs hanging onto the Croatian midfielder, Pienaar has warned that he will be targeted again in the summer as the Premier League's giants look to strengthen their squads.

The South African, who joined Everton on loan during the last day of the transfer window told the Mirror that he can sympathise with Modric, who he feels had his head turned by the west Londonders.

Luka is a top player for Spurs and if he leaves it is hard to say what will happen there,” he said.

“He is such an important member of the team. Tottenham will want to keep him at the club, but it is difficult when a player like him wants to move on.

“As a player only a few opportunities to move on come up in your life, so I can see it from both sides. I understand from my own experience that if a good opportunity is blocked by your club, it can be hard to concentrate.”

Pienaar returned to Everton, having endured a difficult time at White Hart Lane. Injury and competition has seen his game time severely restricted.
