Newcastle United have been linked with a surprise move for want-away Juventus winger Eljero Elia, as they look to mount a fresh assault on the Premier League top four next season.
The Magpies have been one of the surprise packages this season and according to Goal.com, are hoping to reflect their ambitions with a move for the out-of-favour Dutchman.
Elia has found himself frequently on the sidelines this season, as Juventus won their first official league title in nine years, and has now made public his desire to leave Turin.
The 25 year-old is quoted as telling Algemeen Dagblad “I want to leave Juventus. I want to enjoy playing football again. I remained quiet all year and was always positive towards the club and the team , but I never got a chance to prove my worth.
"I didn't play much and consequently miss out on Euro 2012. It's fair to say this season has been a failure. It's really hurt me, but I've become stronger mentally.
"I'm 25 now and I still have a long career ahead of me. I came from far, but I will have to start all over again."
That could well happen at Newcastle with Goal sources claiming that Elia is hoping for a move to the Sports Direct Arena, despite turning them down last summer.
It is believed that Toon boss Alan Pardew is hoping to bring in a wide-man to levy the burden on Demba Ba, who has been forced to play on the wing following the arrival of Papiss Cisse in January.
