Liverpool are lining up a move for Anderlecht star Lucas Biglia as manager Kenny Dalglish looks to sign a new defensive midfielder.
The Anfield club have already invested heavily this summer in the squad's midfield with £48m spent on recruiting Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing.
And Dalglish is reportedly targeting a swoop for 25-year-old Biglia as a replacement for Lucas Leiva.
According to the Daily Mirror and despite being named Liverpool's player of the season, Leiva is viewed as an unnecessary expense and the club have identified Biglia as a cheaper alternative.
The 24-year-old Brazilian, who signed a new bumper contract in March, is rumoured to be on his way out of Anfield on loan to help balance the books after the club's heavy spending during the transfer window.
Biglia is reportedly keen to play for Liverpool after he was convinced by compatriot and former Liverpool star Javier Mascherano.
The former Independiente player is a fully-fledged Argentina international and took part in his country's disappointing Copa America campaign.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have allowed forward Milan Jovanovic to leave the club after a frustrating 12 months at Anfield. The 30-year-old Serbia player was signed on a free transfer by former boss Rafa Benitez but failed to hold down a regular place under his successor Roy Hodgson or current boss Dalglish.
