Liverpool have now emerged as the most likely destination for out-of-contract midfielder Mohamed Diame who is available on a free transfer after leaving Wigan at the end of the season.
The Senegal international impressed while playing for Roberto Martinez's side last season but made the decision not to renew his contract and has now become one of the most sought after players available on a bosman.
The 24-year-old was signed by Wigan for €3.8million from Rayo Vallecano back in 2009 and went on to make 96 Premier League appearances for the Latics.
A powerful defensive midfielder he would certainly add another dimension to the Liverpool side that struggled to cope with the loss of Lucas Leiva who missed most of last season through injury.
Liverpool did use Jay Spearing on a number of occasions last season but the youngster often struggled to impress as the Reds struggled in the league.
However, it is not yet a done deal as Aston Villa are also expected to be in the running to sign Diame after Paul Lambert was handed the reigns at Villa Park.
