Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has revealed he was close to joining Tottenham in the summer before he made his switch to Anfield.
Spurs host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon and Downing is sure to be lining up against the north London club.
The former Middlesborough player joined the Merseysiders from Aston Villa in a £20m deal and he has admitted he could have moved to Spurs had Harry Redknapp not been concerned over his fitness.
“Tottenham made a couple of moves for me when I was at Boro," Downing said. "There were offers in the summer of 2008. Spurs came in again that following January. Then I got injured.
“Because I was injured I think Spurs were reluctant to come back in.
“The big thing for me was that Martin O’Neill was pushing hard for me to join Villa. If a player is injured then it takes a lot of trust to sign him.”
