Former Aston Villa star Ian Taylor has come out in support of Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert, insisting he just needs time for everything to fall into place.
Villa have lost four, drawn three and won one of their Premiership fixtures so far this season but Taylor, who made over two hundred appearances for the club, believes that Lambert just needs time to rebuild.
“He’s got a major rebuilding job on his hands,” Taylor told the Weekend Sports Breakfast. “He’s been wheeling and dealing in the lower leagues and he’s got some good players to Aston Villa but it’s just taking a bit of time for them to gel.
“The Premier League is new to a lot of these players as well so it’s going to take time and hopefully he’ll get that time.”
Taylor also believes that there is no rift between Lambert and Darren Bent, despite the player’s lack of time on the pitch recently.
“They’re both professionals,” he added. “I think it’s just a case of Darren Bent wanting to play every game and I think with the squad system that you have nowadays players aren’t going to be happy when they’re left out.
“Maybe at times there has been a communication breakdown but I know that if I was left out and I was Darren Bent I wouldn’t be happy.
“With the team not doing well the manager wants to try different things and he has brought Christian Benteke in who is a different type of player all together. I think sometime, according to who you’re playing, you have to change the team and I think that’s what he’s done.
“Lambert has just played the players who he thinks will get a result on the day and at times Darren Bent hasn’t come into those thoughts.
“We’ve got Darren Bent, Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor and I’m not sure whether the manager thinks he can play all three, so it’s two from those three.”
