Graham Taylor has suggested the England should appoint Steven Gerrard as captain after it was announced that John Terry would be stripped of the captaincy amir reports of alleged racist remarks made to Anton Ferdinand.
The former England boss believes that Gerrard is the perfect candidate to step into the role of captain as he has previously lead the national team on a number of occasions and is well respected within the squad.
"Gerrard's been captain before and I'd expect [England boss Fabio] Capello to give it to him," Taylor admitted to BBC Sport. "If he gets his top-class form back, I think I would do the same."
Terry is awaiting trial after pleading not guilty at his hearing on Wednesday and has learned that his trial will not take place until July 9, which is eight days after Euro 2012 finishes.
However, the FA took the decision to strip Terry of the captaincy for the second time and Taylor believes they have made the right decision.
"This is the correct decision. The FA have got it right, though they'll be accused of getting it wrong. It's a recognition of the embarrassment that could be caused both for Terry and the England team.
"Terry will feel let down by the FA. He will feel upset because he's made it very clear that he could handle the situation," continued Taylor.
"Playing on the football pitch is an escape for him.But they have taken the captaincy away so he will not be put into public positions as he would have been had he been captain. I think that helps him."
Gerrard has been captain of Liverpool for nine years and was initially installed as England skipper when Fabio Capello was first given the role of manager in 2008.
With Rio Ferdinand no longer considered a first team regular for England, it seems there are only a few possible candidates with Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker another option having performed so well for Spurs this season.
Another possible alternative could be goalkeeper Joe Hart who is certainly one player in the England team that is likely to play every game, having been a constant under Capello.
