Everton Reportedly Lining Up Swoop For Swedish Veteran

Everton are reportedly preparing a move for veteran Swedish defender Olof Mellberg.

Mellberg, who spent seven years at Aston Villa, currently plays for Greek side Olympiacos, but his recent displays for Sweden at the European Championships have impressed,

with the Daily Mail claiming that Everton boss David Moyes is prepared to take a punt on the 34 year-old.

The former Juventus centre-back also reminded people of his aerial abilities, grabbing a brace against England in the 3-2 group D loss.

Mellberg is believed to have reached a stalemate with Olympiakos over a new deal, which place Everton in a favourable position, should they wish to make an approach.

Toffees boss David Moyes has been told he has a limited budget as he looks to strengthen his Everton team this summer, and a cut-price move for Mellberg could be a shrewd acquisition, given his Premier League experience.

Moyes has been heavily linked with the vacant manager's role at Tottenham Hotspur following Harry Redknapp's departure earlier this month, but it looks as though the Scot will remain on Merseyside after admitting that he is 'rolling along' with his plans for the new season.
