ENGLISH CLUBS LEARN EUROPA LEAGUE FATE

Liverpool have been rewarded for their victory over Rabotnicki with a tricky encounter against Turkish club Trabzonspor as British clubs discovered their Europa League play-off opponents.

Big spending Manchester City were drawn against Romanian side FC Timisoara while Aston Villa will face Austrian club Rapid Vienna for the second year in succession.

The three SPL sides also learned their fate as Celtic – fresh from being knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers – face Dutch side Utrecht. Dundee United line up against AEK Athens and Motherwell take on Danish club Odense BK.

Welsh minnows TNS will face a tricky tie against CSKA Sofia with the two-legged ties to take place on the 19 and 26 August, subject to change.

Roy Hodgson will hope that he replicate his Europa League success with Liverpool after leading Fulham to the final last year. It will not be easy for the men from Merseyside with a trip to Turkey always a daunting task.

Club secretary Ian Silvester said. “"Returning to Turkey brings back great memories of Istanbul in 2005.

"At this early stage of the season it will be a tough game for us. The Europa League is a good competition to win and we want to go further than the semi-final stage that we reached last season."

Manchester City will be hoping that a trip to Romania will not pose too many problems for a club that has spent big in the summer transfer window. While Aston Villa will be looking for revenge against Austria Vienna who knocked out Martin O’Neill’s men at the same stage last season.

Victory over the two legs will mean entry into the competition group stage.
