Arsenal Hopes Dashed as Fiorentina Midfielder Set to Sign New Contract

Arsenal appear set to miss out on yet another major target as Riccardo Montolivo looks likely to sign a new contract with Fiorentina, according to his agent.

The Gunners have been desperately searching for midfield reinforcements following the departure of star pair Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas this summer. However, manager Arsene Wenger moved too late in the transfer window to secure any of his major targets which reportedly included Montolivo.

The 25-year-old has been a key member of the Fiorentina midfield ever since moving from Atalanta in 2005 and has notched up over 200 appearances for the club.

The Italy international has entered the final year of his contract which has prompted speculation surrounding his future with some reports claiming a move to the Premier League could be on the cards.

However, Montolivo's agent Giovanni Branchini has reassured Fiorentina fans that a new contract is imminent and dashed Arsenal hopes of securing a bargain deal.

"There are clubs interested in the player, this is normal," he told Italian website Calciomercato. "His contract in Italy ends in June and we do not have any plans to meet with the Fiorentina management.

"But we are calm and dialogue is not broken with the club. Throughout the year we will find a solution that is good for both parties."
