Zara-Phillips Hoping for Olympic Place

Zara-Phillips Hoping for Olympic Place

Despite what must be somewhat distracting tabloid coverage of her new husband’s boisterous behaviour in Queensland, Zara Phillips is moving slowly and steadily towards a possible place on the Great Britain equestrian team for the London Olympics.

Competing in the Bellendenisk horse trials in Ireland this week, she completed a very impressive dressage portion of the competition, finishing second on Lord Lauries. On Saturday, she finished the cross-country competition with just 6.4 time faults, putting her in first place overall going into the final showjumping phase.

With solid finishes at both Burghley and Blenheim horse trials earlier in the year, Bellendenisk would be Phillips’ first international win since June 2008.  In the past few years as her primary ride Toytown fought off injuries, she has had trouble finding another horse to ride at the top international level. Lord Lauries, and the time to concentrate on her work may well combine to help her on the way.
