Unhappy McCoy Notches Up Another Big Win

It is typical of AP McCoy that his response to winning the Victor Chandler Chase yesterday at Ascot for the second time was to be critical of his performance.

Master Minded, the 4-7 favourite, held off a late challenge by Somersby to win by a short head and take the horse's career earningsto over 1 million but the Irish jockey, winner of more national hunt races than anyone in the history ofracing in the British Isles, was far from happy.

He told trainer Paul Nicholls that he should have waited longer than to kick for home at the final bend. He added that he is always honest when he feels he has ridden a good race and bad race. "That wasa bad race," he added.

Still it helped to make up for the joint-disappointment felt by McCoy and Nicholls after last weekend's failure in the King George V1th Chase at Kempton where favourite Kauto Star, aiming for a stunning fifth win, trailed in third. Last week he was subsequently discovered to be carrying a virus.

It also adds to McCoy's amazing streak in less than a year that saw him win the Grand National last April, the Sports Personality of the Year award last month, and the Welsh Grand National, completing a full house of Nationals, a fortnight ago. Adding a 16th consecutive jockeys' title is now a formality for McCoy.
