Bradley Wiggins says Team GB will struggle to repeat their eight gold medal haul at the Beijing Olympics.
Changes to the event schedule for the London 2012 games include the removal of the individual pursuit, Wiggins’ main event.
“I don’t think we’ll ever be able to replicate what we did in Beijing,” said the triple gold medalist. “We can only lose in a lot of people’s eyes. It’s a completely different set of circumstances.”
Wiggins still believes he can win gold in the time trial, but is aware that the changes to the schedule have implications for his other event, the road race, which comes just four days before.
When Mark Cavendish, who will start the Olympic road race as the favourite, won his world road race title in Copenhagen in September, Wiggins dragged the field around the final lap so his team-mate could sprint to victory. But Wiggins says he is unlikely to do the same in London since he will start the road race ‘with complete priority to the time trial’.
“I’ll give 100 per cent on the day and hope that’s enough. I don’t know if I’ll finish it” Wiggins added.
