Cavendish Has Queen's Backing for London Gold

The Queen has said she’ll give a cheer for Mark Cavendish as he passes Buckingham Palace on his way to the Olympic road race finish in 2012.

Cavendish, who won five stages of the 2011 Tour de France to become the first British rider to claim the green jersey for the most points earned for intermediate sprints and stage wins, is on target to claim Britain's first gold medal of London 2012 in the men's road race on the opening Saturday of the Games.

As he collected his MBE, yesterday, he spoke about his conversation with Her Majesty.

"She said I must have put in a lot of hard work to get where I am” he said, "We were talking about the Olympics and finishing on the Mall outside Buckingham Palace next year. I told her to give me a cheer when we come past. She said, "Yes, alright."
