After a press conference today in London, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer announced it is highly likely that Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather will meet in London next year.
After his defeat to Breidis Prescott in 2008, Khan teamed up with Freddie Roach and has gone on to earn a reputation as one of the most exciting boxers around, whilst also winning numerous world titles with the American trainer by his side.
The Bolton fighter has had three bouts in America and is becoming a fan favourite across the pond with impressive performances against the likes of Marcos Maidana and Zab Judah.
Many boxing fans and writers want to see a Khan v Mayweather showdown next year, with the 24-year-old Brit saying he would like the fight: "I think every young fighter wants to fight the best out there and in this era Floyd is the best along with Manny Pacquiao.
"Floyd is a fight that - in the next 12 months - could happen. And to bring that fight to the UK - Floyd has said that he would want to fight in Wembley Stadium - what a huge fight that would be."
Speaking at a press conference in London to announce that the Mayweather v Victor Ortiz fight on September 17, which will be screened on Primetime, Schaefer said: "Amir Khan will be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world.
"The card on September 17th has tremendous implications for fight fans in the UK. Two of Amir's next three opponents are fighting on this card.
"I'm talking about either Mayweather or Ortiz, and also (Erik) Morales or (Lucas) Matthysse. We are looking at Amir fighting again in December and in March next year and are trying to lock in both dates.
"The idea is for Amir to be fighting in December in the United States against either the winner of Morales v Matthysse or the winner out of Maidana and (Robert) Guerrero.
The Golden Boy Promotion's CEO, feels next year is going to be a big year for the 2004 Olympic silver medalist: "After taking on those guys, Khan will then look at moving up to the Welterweight division and fight a well known opponent, maybe a former world champion as his welterweight debut over here in the UK."
After all of that could come the mega-fight between Mayweather and Khan: "We are looking at the possibly of having Khan v Mayweather next December, which will be one of the biggest fights in recent history in the UK.
"If you are Floyd Mayweather and you are the number one box office attraction in the world and command huge amounts of money then ultimately it's going to be up to him to decide where he wants the fight to be.
"Based on conversations I've had with him he has made it clear to me that he wants to seriously explore the opportunity of having that fight with Khan at Wembley stadium, it is a dream of his to fight at Wembley."
