Alvarez Weighting Up his Options After Ortiz Suffers Shock Loss

Golden Boy promotions have revealed that they are still keen for Saul Alvarez to defender his WBC light-middleweight title on September 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Alvarez was all set to face Victor Ortiz, only for the American fighter to suffer a broken jaw in the shock loss to Josesito Lopez at the weekend.

With Ortiz now out of the running, Golden Boy will look to find another suitable opponent for the 21-year-old who is desperate to fight on September 15 as it is Mexican independence day.

The unbeaten Mexican fighter has admitted he only wants to fight the very best in the business which could be difficult on the date that has already been booked.

"I can't think of anyone at the moment but that's why I have my team," Alvarez added. "I just prepare. I'd like to fight the best but they aren't ready. [Floyd]Mayweather is in jail. [Miguel] Cotto won't fight in September. So I just want to fight the best [available]."

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has indicated that an opponent will be named by the end of the week, with two names being mentioned in Austin Trout and Carlos Quintana.

"What I know for sure is that 'Canelo' Alvarez will be fighting on September 15 from the MGM Grand," said Schaefer.

"What we are going to be doing next week with the matchmakers and Canelo's team is evaluating different options, and we are looking at three possible names."
