Ennis Hoping to Smash British Record and Achieve Gold

World Championship silver medallist Jessica Ennis says she’ll need to smash the British record if she has a chance of winning gold in the heptathlon at the London 2012 Olympics.

"I'll have to break the British record, definitely” she said, "I think it could take 6,900 points to win and that's going to be really, really tough."

Ennis set her personal best of 6,823 points at last year's European Championships in Barcelona, which included her best-ever javelin throw of 46.71 metres.  Her top score is just eight points away from the British record of 6,831 set by 2000 Olympic champion Denise Lewis.

However, she will have tough competition from Russia's Tatyana Chernova, who was crowned world champion with 6,880 points in August.

"When I start competing I will just say no to all the media and other stuff” Ennis said, "It will all be over before you know it. The main thing now is staying injury-free and being in a position to give yourself the chance on the day."
