Tottenham Hotspur are close to completing a deal to sign Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen after the defender declared that he has been impressed with everything about the club.
The Belgium international will likely be in action against England at Wembley on Saturday and he has admitted that he has already been shown around the Tottenham training ground and has been left excited at the prospect of joining Spurs.
The 25-year-old is expected to seal his move to Tottenham in the coming days after admitting earlier in the season that he wanted to make this his last year with Dutch champions Ajax.
Originally it had seemed as though Arsenal could have been another option for Vertonghen, but he has revealed how happy he was to meet with Harry Redknapp and he is unconcerned that they are not in the Champions League.
“It would be nice to be in the Champions League, of course, but I choose a club not for one season but for the long term," Vertonghen told The Sun. "For me it’s important to have a connection with the club and Tottenham gave me a good feeling about everything.
“They invited me to the training ground and really wanted to close the deal. They showed me everything and told me where they want to be in the next few years — that is important for me.
“They have a new training ground and I was happy they showed me around. I met Harry Redknapp and he is a good manager, he seems to be very friendly.
“I have only heard good things about him so I’m happy he is still at Tottenham and not with England.”
Vertonghen has established himself as one of the most talented defenders in Europe after leading Ajax to consecutive titles and the Spurs fans will certainly be happy to see him pick White Hart Lane over the Emirates.
