With the 16th edition of the biggest club rugby tournament, the Heineken Cup now underway, adidas is continuing its successful partnership with the ERC (European Rugby Cup) with the arrival of the 'Torpedo Respect' - the Official Match Ball for the Tournament.
Unveiled at the iconic Millenium Stadium on the 27th September by adidas ambassadors Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints), Johnnie Beattie, Alistair Kellock (Glasgow Warriors) and Osprey's Alun Wyn Jones, the adidas Torpedo Respect is the ideal match ball to meet the intensive requirements of elite competition.
The adidas Torpedo Respect is 100% hand stitched and crafted from natural rubber, the interior is composed of a mixture of latex and butyl to offer exceptional quality and durability both in handling as well as kicking. In addition, through positioning the valve in the seam and not in the middle of a panel, there is an enhanced sweet spot area ideal for kicking. With such an array of technical innovations, the adidas Tornado Respect is the perfect ball for the biggest club competition in world rugby.
Osprey's Alun Wyn Jones commented: "The Torpedo Respect is the perfect ball for the demands of the Heineken Cup. With the best clubs in Europe competing for the prestigious Heineken Cup, the Torpedo Respect allows for an exceptional quality of play both with the ball in hand and for the kicking game."
Also used by the All Blacks, the Torpedo Respect was created at the headquarters of adidas, at Herzogenaurach in Germany. During the design process, adidas had the benefit of calling on the expertise of former All Blacks kicking coach, Mick Byrne, before the ball was tested by two of the best all round players in the game today, All Black fly half Dan Carter, and François Steyn of the world champion South African Springbocks.
