The rumours that Pele would shockingly emerge from retirement in 2011 – some 35 years after he formally hung up his boots – were founded on Santos president Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Rebeiro’s insistence that the legend “promised to train to get fit and participate for a few minutes”. Ludicrous? Certainly. Rebeiro reasoned; “It struck me that Pele was a three-time world champion [1958, '62 and '70] with the national team but only twice with Santos ['62 and '63].”
The sickening thing is that Pele would almost certainly still run rings around the pampered stars of today; chances are, he would be doing so in a pair of his own boots. Fortunately, his global football brand – Pele Sports – have released the groundbreaking new model for SS 2012, after years of ergonomic research and footwork analysis.
The ultra-light Trinity 3E boot has “harnessed the ability to perform a dual task: maximising a player’s game and speed potential and actually training your muscles as you play.”
“Tackling the 3rd element”, the Pele Sports team focused on injury prevention as well as what they call “propulsion performance”. Studies at the Duisburg-Essen University in Germany revealed a high statistical significance level of the Trinity 3E, allowing significantly faster movements compared to alternative high-performance boots.
“The boot gives the player the advantage in a small or tight space scenario,” Professor Ewald Henning claimed, as head of the Biomechanics Laboratory. “For longer manoeuvres, players can have an advantage of being up to 1.5 metres closer to the ball on the field.”
Working with Formula One engineers to include the lightest weight materials, the Trinity 3E also focuses on a unique stud geometry that harnesses force generation and triggers improved ground contract. The asymmetrical stud pattern helps to enable increased muscle stimulation, with a tactile area under foot improving speed and agility movements.
