Congratulations to legendary Lions coach Ian McGeechan who today becomes a Knight of the Realm in the New Years' Honours List for his stupendous work in rugby both as a player and a coach with Scotland, Wasps and most notably the British and Irish Lions. He joins a list of knighted sports figures in recent years including Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent and Sir Chris Hoy, the latter perhaps providing the best responsewhen I asked him how he wanted me to address him as. "You don't have to call me Sir on anything," replied the four-time Olympic gold cycling medallist with a grin fixed firmly on his face. "That would make me feel uncomfortable. No, I'm still exactly the same person as I've always been, knighthood or no knighthood, and that will never change. Just make sure you kneel before my presence on every occasion we meet!" Chris (or Sir Chris) was, I can assure you, joking.
