The Iceman: Beach Running and Training at -23 degrees

Monday 6th Aug - Sunday 12th Aug - I started the week on the South coast so I took full advantage of the scenery and participated in two ten mile beach runs.

Richard Donovan the race director (Ice Marathon) said beach running is good training as the terrain gives underfoot. Ten miles took me two hours when it would normally take me 1hr 20mins. Wednesday I got back to Nottingham and did my usual circuit of eight miles on road, which was absolute heaven compared to the two days before. I then had a rest day and fed myself up eating plenty of carbohydrates and drinking plenty of water ready for my big day Friday.

The day came and I was up early and made my way down to the ergonomics research lab at Loughborough University. There I met George Havenith the professor there, and he showed me to a room that had a treadmill in and a temperature of -23. The UK sales manager for Odlo (my kit sponsor) Ian Latham came up to go through the kit with me and see if anything needed changing or adding to get a perfect balance of running at optimum level whilst Keeping me warm and safe in such a hostile environment. The kit was awesome, I felt warm throughout and didn't feel uncomfortable from sweating as the Odlo base layers really wicked the sweat away.

Overall the day was a great success and a great confidence boost. Another eight miles on Sunday morning finished the week off.
